Louie's Lobster Tale

I've been a bit pre-occupied lately so I apologize for my delay in posting the Lobster story.  I again have decided to punish myself and train for another semi-long race!  A few friends have convinced me to sign up for the TarHeel 10-miler in Chapel Hill in April and I need to get my butt back in shape. (Don't worry the hubby is doing it with me!)  So, the past week has been spent getting myself back on a training program...miles, weights and yoga! Woo.

Onto Louie.
(Animal activists may want to leave my blog post now, apologies,)
Call me sick, but I named my Valentine's Lobster.  His name was Louie.  Anyways, I picked him up at the grocery store and he sat in my cart, crawling about in his little seafood bag for about 30 minutes while I finished my shopping - we bonded.  On the way home, he even rode shotgun.  Once we got home...it was not super easy to proceed with cooking.  No such much about Louie's life but the strong ethical debate Chuck and I had about cooking the poor lobster.
Chuck's Approach:  Freeze lobster, knife to the head, pot of boiling water
Suzanne's Approach:  Straight to the pot of boiling water
My research prone hubby did plenty of lobster cooking analysis before the big meal so he was prepared.  He read that freezing the lobster numbs him a bit and makes it easier to handle.  It is said that it takes about 2-3 minutes for the lobster to die once it hits the pot of water so a a sharp knife to the poor, small lobster skull is recommended to kill him quickly so he feels no pain.
We compromised a bit.  Louie went to the freezer and then straight to the water.  I couldn't bear having this poor lobster stabbed to death on my counter top.  Not a chance.  We boiled a LARGE pasta pot full of water and in he went. (Be sure to take the bands off his claws first).
It took about 16 minutes to cook (1.7lbs baby!) and that was it.  The cracking and prep to get the meat out was a bit messy but totally worth it.  Lobsters are an impressive entree option but they are so easy...once you get past the ethics of it all.  I recommend your try it at least once!
RIP Louie - 2/14/2012
